hmm.. it appears the LBA mode bit was taken out of the ATA-3 spec and LBA mode
was made manditory (obviously since ATA-3 made it manditory all ATA-2 drives are
now obsolete and need no longer be supported :) ). in any case for backwards
compatability with older drives you just need to check bit 9 in word 49 of the
device identification info... (it is marked obsolete in the ATA-3 spec.).

you can also pay a whole lot of money to the pc-card consortium or whatever its
called to get the actual specs but this is probably enough to put something
