keyboard escape sequences; command history; etc.

I know I read somewhere about option for enable/disable of keyboard escape
sequences, but I can't seem to find it now.

My problem is that up arrow produces A etc., which makes last-command-recall
rather useless. (Is this feature supported in VSTa's sh anyway? (I sure hope
so.)) (Naturally, arrow keys don't work with less, either.)

Also, with less, I get the following at startup:
WARNING: terminal cannot "clear to end of line"
WARNING: terminal cannot "clear screen"
WARNING: terminal cannot "home cursor"
WARNING: terminal cannot "move cursor to lower left of screen"
WARNING: terminal cannot "scroll backwards"

Do I need to update termcap or something? (I just want to suppress the
warnings.)

Thanks

Paul
