Reading the Console Keyboard

I'm trying to find a way to read the console keyboard directly, without having
to wait and without having to hit return. It should be simple, but I can not
find a straight forward example.

I would think that I could open a read-only connection with the console and
request single characters at a time (using the no block option). Unfortunately
I just can't seem to get all of the right pieces together to write the code. I
desperately need an example -- help!
