   The real reason you might prefer ext2 to any other is the fact that
   all the filesystem code has been carefully isolated an put in a library.
   So far there exist an ext2 server for hurd.
   
You could say the same thing for any file system implementation that
supports the vnode interface. Building in support for vnodes will
allow you to easily drop in any vnode file system implementation
(cd-rom, nfs, dos, afs, ufs, etc).
