Note that the ISO-9660 CDROM filesystem does a similar thing. There is
a variable length System Use Area within each directory record to support
extensions to the specification. There is also a protocol, called the System
Use Sharing Protocol or SUSP, for managing this area. Layered on top of the
SUSP, the Rock Ridge extensions define records for long filenames, symbolic
links, and Posix file attributes, etc.
