MGR in VSTa 1.6.5

I've installed VSTa on a real machine now(as opposed to running it in Bochs)
but I can't run mgr; it exits with a 'perm'. This is what I tried when
logged in as root(though I don't see how that should make any difference):

vsta$ mgr &
   Using Cirrus Logic GD542x/3x driver (5436, 1024k)

   perm

vsta$ mgr -v
   MGR version 0.53 compiled by SER at Sun Dec 15 09:36:11 1996 GMT
   System: VSTa baruk v1.5.2 i386

   perm

The video does work because the system is running windows. I took off the
case and checked out the video chip. It is indeed a Cirrus Logic GD5436 chip
integrated onto the motherboard. The computer is a Compaq Deskpro P166MHz.
