Kernel and Usermode

If I have such a programm like MGR or any other graphics output I would
need access to the video memory. How is this done, if all servers
(modules) run in usermode (or don't they)? Do they have direct access to
the hardware? Sorry, I had not had time to have a look on the svgalib
code. :-(
