help with dos boot strapping environment ?

A few pointers would be appreciated.

I nearly had things running smoothly, until djgpp's patch corrupted half a
dozen files (14) including the vsta rcs source and the djgcc files.
When I attempted to recreate things from floppy I didnt manage to get
the environment working properly :-(
Also djtarx does not like untaring unix tar files with directories so I cant
use patch under unix.

Can someone point me to a reliable set of tools for $%-^!@ bootstrapping ?

[ I dont really want to buy MKS just to bootstrap vsta. ]
