hard disk problems

This weekend I tried to find out why VSTa didn't like my hard disk (at
home -- the one in the 386 here works fine). I compiled a standalone
testsh and booted. I found out that I can read any single sector on the
disk with sec. But while reading the root directory for the dos fs, wd
gets an error 0x10 (address mark not found) at sector 52. Since this is
the first sector on its track it seems possible that multi-sector reads
spanning a cylinder/head switch don't work correctly. I also noticed
that seeking is extremely slow and noisy (as if it did track-by-track
seeks). I compared wd to the Minix at_wini driver, but it seems to do
everything the same way.
