Question about LBA on PC's

So I see how I can configure an I/O using LBA addressing--there's a new bit
in the command, and then a new encoding which goes into the
sector/cylinder/track values. But what I *don't* see is how I tell that a
controller supports LBA, and/or that a given disk (or partition) is
addressed that way? Can somebody in the know give me a URL to something
which can give me the big picture?
