Nope, I think HURD uses GRUB too. Did you ever find out what kind of values
your BIOS was returning for the disk geometry? If you can recompile GRUB
(which I think I remember that you could), perhaps you should just patch in
the right values to see if GRUB can press on from there.
Early on I had thought about adapting the old DOS-based VSTa boot loader to
do multiboot loading. But GRUB worked too well, and at this point I'm not
sure I could even dig up my Borland C disks and manuals.
